Help save our roof!

roof outside 2.jpg

Following the discovery that one of the main roof beams had developed a large crack and needed to be strengthened, we remain very concerned about the overall condition of the roof at St Paul’s Church.

We are very lucky that we don’t have many leaks, but our Architect has advised us that the weight of the stone slates will only continue to cause problems in the future. As a matter of some urgency we now need to renew the roof covering completely, but this time with Welsh slate. This will be much lighter in weight for the existing roof structure.

The wavy pattern across the ridge tiles shows just how much movement there has been over the years. While the roof structure remains safe for us to use the church, we clearly need to get on and re-roof the large Nave and Chancel areas of our Church as soon as possible.

The new slate roof will be in keeping with the other key Victorian buildings near us on Queens Road, and we already have planning consent for this work to proceed. The new roof will also have some much-needed insulation, which will help to keep us a little warmer and reduce heating costs.

Please help us re-roof St Paul’s, and be part of our exciting Restoration and Renewal Programme, to make sure our lovely church building can remain open for the community of King Cross, and can be used by generations to come.

We need some 8,500 slates and they will cost £6.00 each. Each slate you buy will help us complete this important work. You may like to buy a slate in thanksgiving of an anniversary for example, or in memory of a loved one or friend. We will keep a record of these particular donations.

The whole project to re-roof the Church will cost in the region of £400,000. Please buy a slate and help save our Church roof and this major landmark in the parish of King Cross. To protect this important local resource and our heritage we need your help.
